Challah French Toast Recipe

Pillowy, decadent, and comforting are all words that perfectly describe this Challah French Toast. Put your own spin on it with any fresh fruits and toppings that you have at home!

Ingredients:

*Makes about 4 French Toasts, depending on how thin you slice your Challah

*Use organic ingredients for best results

  • 120g or 1/2 cup any of the following or a combination: whole milk, heavy cream, evaporated milk, half and half, (I like equal parts whole milk and heavy cream)

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 Tbsp cane sugar or honey

  • 1/4-1/3 tsp or 1-2g salt

  • 1/2-1 tsp or 3-5g vanilla extract

  • 1/4 tsp or 1g freshly grated nutmeg, cinnamon, mace, cardamom or combination

  • 1/2 cup or 60g (or more, if needed) all-purpose flour (optional for extra crispy coating)

  • 2-3Tbsp avocado, coconut, or sunflower oil for frying

  • Optional toppings: pats of unsalted butter, real maple syrup, fresh fruit, real whipped cream, toasted pecans, macadamia nuts or walnuts

Directions:

  1. Whisk together the first 6 ingredients until well combined.

  2. Arrange 4-6 slices challah in a shallow pan and pour the egg mixture over the bread. Allow to sit at least 15-30 minutes, preferably longer to allow the liquid to soak into the bread very well.

  3. Work one slice at a time, remove the bread from the batter, allow excess liquid to drain a little then coat with flour--if using--on both sides.

  4. Heat a cast iron or nonstick pan over slightly higher than medium heat, add a tablespoon of oil and fry the soaked bread slices, adding more oil as needed until well-browned on both sides.

  5. Serve while warm with butter and real maple syrup, or fresh fruit and real whipped cream.

Store leftovers (if you have any!) in the freezer. Reheat in 350℉ oven or toaster oven until crisp and heated through, about 10-15 minutes from its frozen state.
